EU citizens who travel to one of the EU countries do not need to show a passport but only a valid National ID card. There are no longer checks at the internal frontiers of 28 countries of the European Union. This is possible thanks to the Schengen Agreement, which is part of EU law. With the Schengen Agreement were removed all internal border controls but were introduced effective controls at the external borders of the EU and has been established a common Visa policy. The countries which fully apply the Schengen agreement are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Hungary, plus Iceland and Norway (non-EU). Ireland and the United Kingdom have not signed the agreement.

For non-EU citizens
Non-EU citizens traveling in the European Union always need a valid passport.

Documents required for travel outside Europe
To cross the EU's external borders you will need to have a valid passport.
